Get FREE locally produced compost made from New York City food scraps. New York City residents can pre-register to receive up to 6 bags of compost. Each bag weighs approximately 40 pounds.

FAQs

Will there be volunteers to help load my vehicle?
Volunteers will be present to assist with operations but are not expected to load bags into cars.

How should I prepare for picking up compost?
Clear out space in your vehicle before arrival. Tip: Bring a plastic liner or carboard to keep your vehicle clean.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?
In the case that the person whose name is on the ticket is no longer able to attend, email lia@lesecologycenter.org (subject heading: Compost Giveaway), with the name of person picking up on behalf of the recipient. This is especially important for those bringing a vehicle to the event.

Why does each "bringing vehicle for compost pickup" have a designated time slot? Can I show up earlier or later?
To ensure a smooth event and respect neighbors, we are limiting the amount of vehicles at a given time. This is why each "bringing vehicle for compost pickup" ticket has a designated time slot.

I selected a "bringing vehicle for compost pickup" ticket. What happens if I am late?
If you don't show up within the time range on the ticket, your reservation is fortfitted and the compost bags will then be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

I selected a "picking up compost without vehicle" ticket. What happens if I bring a vehicle on the day-of?
Only holders of "bringing vehicle for compost pickup" tickets are allowed to load compost in the loading area. Cancel "picking up compost without vehicle" ticket before ordering the "bring vehicle for compost pickup" ticket.

I plan to carpool to the event with another registrant that has a "bringing vehicle for compost pickup" ticket. Is this allowed?
Yes, of course you may carpool with a friend. As long as one registrant sharing the vehicle has a "bringing vehicle for compost pickup" ticket, it's fine.
